Phone measurement guide
Call abandonment rate for a service-business queue
For this guide, abandonment means an inbound caller disconnecting in a queue before speaking with an agent. Amazon Connect documents that definition and excludes contacts queued for callback from abandonment. Other reports may use different event rules, so check the chosen provider's definition.

Start with an inbound queue definition
A call that never entered the queue, a transfer failure and a disconnect after a conversation should not be silently combined with the same metric. They may deserve attention but answer different operating questions.

Match numerator and denominator
For a queue-based report:
Call abandonment rate = abandoned inbound queue calls ÷ inbound calls entering the same queue population × 100.
Keep period, queue selection and channel consistent. Count call events if the report counts call events. Unique callers, service inquiries and new-job opportunities are different units.
In a fictional example, 120 calls entered the selected queue and 9 disconnected before connection. The result is 9 ÷ 120 × 100 = 7.5%. This illustrates arithmetic only. It is not an acceptable-rate benchmark, Revo result or count of lost jobs.
If no calls entered the queue, show not applicable. A zero denominator does not establish a perfect experience. If an export contains all incoming calls rather than queue entrants, obtain the matching queue count or explicitly label the different metric.

Show short abandons
Some systems identify callers who disconnect within a configured short-abandon window. NiCE distinguishes short and long abandons using a threshold. Check the threshold and how the selected report uses those records.
Record total abandons, short abandons and the threshold. If you show an adjusted rate, state its formula beside the unadjusted figure. Removing records from only the numerator is not the same calculation as removing them from both numerator and denominator.
Do not change thresholds between periods and describe the resulting difference as improvement. Annotate reporting changes. A brief call could reflect a wrong number, changed plans or a confusing opening; duration alone does not reveal the cause.

Investigate a pattern before choosing a fix
Separate useful periods such as staffed hours, closed hours and a known demand surge. Inspect queue waits and outcomes. A daily total can conceal a short period with no office coverage. A low overall rate can conceal a broken route used by few callers.
Review permitted records and run authorized test calls:
Choose a change that matches the observed issue. Staffing, waiting instructions and exit routes solve different problems. Recheck comparable periods with the same definitions.

Separate the rate from business outcomes
An abandoned call is not automatically a lost customer. The caller may retry, be an existing customer or have the wrong business. To study inquiries or bookings, connect records to verified outcomes without double-counting attempts.
Moving callers out of a human queue changes what that queue's rate measures. A lower rate alone does not prove more completed intake or successful follow-up. Review the full path and confirm the data each phone or answering service supplies. Native Revo abandonment reporting is not established here.
Common questions
Make the next step clear.
Resolve the details that matter to your team and callers.
Is abandonment the same as a missed call?
Not necessarily. This guide uses an inbound queue definition. A missed-call report can include other unanswered events. Compare documented definitions first.
What rate should a small contractor target?
Start with a consistent baseline, reasons callers leave and the experience the team can support. This guide supplies no universal industry threshold.
Should very short hang-ups be excluded?
Keep raw counts visible. If using an adjusted measure, record its threshold and formula and compare like with like.
Can abandoned calls be multiplied by average job value?
That assumes qualified, unique jobs that would have converted. Use verified outcomes for measurement or clearly labelled assumptions in a separate scenario worksheet.
