Google Local Services Ads answering: routing, missed calls and lead records

A paid phone lead needs more than an answered greeting. Someone must capture the request, explain the next step and leave your office with a record it can follow. Before choosing an answering service for Google Local Services Ads, map that entire handoff—not just the number of hours advertised.

Description: Choose answering coverage for Google Local Services Ads by checking the phone route, current missed-call rules and who owns each lead after the conversation.

This guide separates Google’s documented rules from proposed operating checks. Documentation was reviewed October 23, 2026. It does not establish a native Revo–Google integration or guarantee lower advertising costs.

Start with the actual phone route

Google displays a forwarding number that sends the call to your business number. Google also warns that forwarding or VoIP on that business number can prevent you from hearing its “Call from Google” announcement. The absence of that announcement therefore does not prove that a call came from another source. Google: Manage leads and jobs

Before changing coverage, write down:

  • Which business number receives the ad’s calls.
  • Whether the office, a menu or an answering service receives the call next.
  • What happens when the office is busy, closed or unable to transfer the call.
  • Who owns each configuration and can restore the previous route.

Keep advertising configuration and telephone configuration separate in your notes. An answering provider should demonstrate the supported destination and handoff rather than assume it receives every source field from Google.

Understand the current missed-call rules

Google’s current rules allow charges for missed calls exceeding 20 seconds during business hours. A required IVR routing key starts the timer; later keypresses do not restart it. During business hours, voicemail or greetings without a keypress can be chargeable beyond 20 seconds even without a message. Answered calls are assessed from the conversation, not ring duration. Google: How leads work

Do not design a frustrating menu to chase a billing threshold. Choose a route that helps an actual customer explain the requested work and reach the appropriate next step. An answering service cannot promise that a particular call will be free or credited.

Match advertised availability to real coverage

Google defines business hours here using Google Business Profile. When an ad schedule differs, its guidance limits unanswered-call charges to times within both the active schedule and business hours. Google: How leads work

Prepare a coverage table for normal hours, lunch breaks, evenings and holidays. For each period, identify the answering owner, permitted booking actions and fallback. Ask the authorized advertising administrator to review mismatches; do not change published hours merely to make a coverage chart look consistent.

Coverage does not mean field availability. A receptionist may capture a request at night while an estimate or service visit still needs office confirmation. Give callers the correct commitment.

Keep the lead record separate from the job outcome

Google’s lead inbox lets businesses review leads and phone interactions. Its records and your answering service’s records serve different purposes. Google: Manage leads and jobs

Use an office worksheet with these separate fields:

FieldWhat the office should establish
SourceVerified LSA lead, another source, or unresolved
Call resultAnswered, missed, message taken, or transferred
Service fitRequested work and service address checked under your rules
Next actionNamed owner and callback or scheduling task
BookingRequested window versus confirmed appointment
Advertising chargeStatus shown by Google, not inferred from the receptionist’s label

Google exposes charge-status labels, including review and credit states. After a lead is charged, repeat contact from the same phone number or email is not charged again while activity continues within 15 days; 15 inactive days can start a new lead. Google: How leads work

For reconciliation, ask which identifiers your actual setup exposes. Use only supported records and authorized access; if the match is uncertain, preserve that uncertainty rather than guessing from a similar timestamp.

Require a practical demonstration before committing

The following are proposed checks, not tests performed by Revo or for this article. Use the providers’ approved diagnostic or sandbox arrangements with authorization. Do not manufacture advertising leads or place chargeable ad calls for a demonstration without explicit authorization.

  1. Ordinary request: Can the recipient capture the service, address and callback details accurately?
  2. Busy office: Does the documented backup route receive the call, and who owns the request afterward?
  3. Closed office: Is the caller told whether a visit is confirmed or only requested?
  4. Unsuccessful transfer: Does an identifiable person receive the remaining follow-up task?
  5. Missing source announcement: Can the office still reconcile the record without inventing attribution?
  6. Repeat caller: Can staff connect the conversation to the existing inquiry rather than duplicate the job?

Record the expected outcome before each demonstration. Review the resulting office record, not just how natural the greeting sounds.

Questions to settle with the answering provider

Ask what happens after intake, which hours and call types are included, what requires your staff, and whether any proposed connection has actually been verified. Confirm who maintains forwarding and how exceptions reach a person.

Does answering every call remove LSA charges? No. An answered conversation may still be a valid paid lead. Coverage is about handling the opportunity, not making Google’s billing disappear.

Does this guide verify a Revo integration with Google Local Services Ads? No. Confirm the supported phone route and record handoff directly with Revo and your phone provider.

Is a recorded lead a booked job? No. Booking needs its own evidence and an authorized appointment commitment.

For related decisions, review dynamic number insertion, conditional forwarding, and appointment booking. Compare Revo’s current plans against the call-handling scope you have established.
